Here at Quality Water Services, we know that selling soft water systems is only half of our job. The other half is to inform our customers so that they understand not only what they’re buying and why it’s the right choice for their home, but also the benefits that come along with implementing a soft water system. Winter is when people really start to see some of the issues hard water can cause, so this week we’re going to talk about some of the benefits that a new water softener can provide your family when cold weather hits.
Sayonara, Scratchy Skin
Plenty of people suffer from dry, irritated skin during the winter. While special creams and moisturizers do the trick for some, others have to simply wait out the winter before the issues go away. For those individuals—especially those with already sensitive skin—a soft water system may provide the answer.
The high mineral content makes it hard for soaps to lather and to rinse properly. Because of this, we tend to both overuse cleaning products on our skin and have a more difficult time rinsing all that product off—both of which could be causes of scratchy skin. Additionally, soap residue can lead to clogged pores which cause acne and blackheads or extra inflammation in individuals who suffer skin diseases like eczema.
After installing a soft water system, you may have to make some changes to your skin-washing routine. The most common issue is that individuals “over-rinse.” The slippery feeling on your skin when using soft water is just the feeling of your skin unencumbered by the extra minerals and soap scum often left behind by hard water. However, people oftentimes keep rinsing to try to “wash away” that feeling because they believe there’s still soap on their hands, face, or body. Resist the urge to over-rinse and you’ll likely see a difference in your skin by winter’s end.
Forgo the Frizz
Having hair issues? Look to your water supply. If you have hard water in your home, it may be the reason for the season—seasonal frizz that is! Hard water can both make it difficult to get a good lather from your shampoo and render it less effective. Because soaps and shampoos react to excess minerals, they spend a lot of time fighting the calcium and magnesium in your water and less time cleaning the oils in your hair. By switching to a soft water system, your hair gets the benefit of that expensive shampoo from Aunt Karen instead of washing half the bottle down the drain due to hard water.
Reduce Your Holiday Bills
You’ve got enough to spend money on this time of year. Barney and Ben want a pair of hop-along boots and a pistol that shoots, while Janice and Jen are hoping for dolls that will talk and go for a walk, and those things aren’t cheap! Luckily, appliances in your home function more efficiently with a soft water system, saving you money. Your water heater in particular will think every day is a holiday as it will use 22–29% less energy throughout the year. The effect will be more noticeable during cold-weather months when water is harder to heat, and we tend to use more of it.
Clean Up your Christmas Cutlery
The last thing you want after cooking a holiday feast is to serve it on dingy dinnerware. As we mentioned, appliances work better using soft water because of the lower percentage of minerals in the water. That translates into cleaner dishes and cutlery because detergent won’t have to work as hard to fight mineral buildup.
For example, those white stains leftover from the dishwasher? They come from limestone buildup. It’s a combination of calcium and magnesium that often takes scrubbing with vinegar or baking soda to remove. Using a soft water system means there’s less calcium and magnesium in your water, so you’ll see clean, sparkling dinnerware instead of unsightly white stains on your good holiday plates.
